Kashagan, an offshore field located at the north of the Caspian Sea,
Kazakhstan sector, was discovered in July, 2000. Owned by a group of
partners led by Agip, presently Kashagan could prove to be the world's fifth
largest oil field. The field, 75 km SSE of Atyrau, lies in just 3.7 m of
water. The field holds an estimated 7 billion - 9 billion barrels of
recoverable oil resources and total geological reserves of 38 billion
barrels.
A Power Plant has been provided as part of the Onshore Processing Plant to
provide electrical power to be used by the Onshore Processing Facility
(OPF), Eskene West Railway Project (EWRP) and early works camp. The Power
Plant includes 110kV outdoor open terminal switchyard and 35kV and 10kV
switchgear to facilitate distribution of electrical power. It will also
include LV switchgear for turbine auxiliaries and other required supplies.
In addition, provision is to be made for connection to overhead 110kV lines
which are tied to the Kazakh National Grid system to allow import and export
of electricity.
Heavy duty industrial turbines in the 35-45MWe (ISO) range have been used on
this project. The Power Plant has been designed as a manned facility, which
can initially operate independently from the OPF. A building will be
designed and constructed, sized for three Essential Diesel Generators,
together with its day tank and pumps. Three Essential Diesel Generators
rated 6.5 MVA, 10 kV, 50 Hz, 1000 rpm shall be installed as part of Tranche
3.
